Here’s the “How to” obtain a marriage license in Chicago:
Obtaining a marriage license is an important task to complete before the big day. All couples in Chicago must receive a marriage license from the Cook County Clerk’s office before they get married. Fortunately, the process is relatively straightforward and the County Clerk will be able to process your application on the same day. Keep in mind that marriage licenses only become valid the day after they are issued, so obtain your license at least 24 hours before the wedding.
Ensure you meet the eligibility requirements for a marriage license under Illinois law. You must be older than 18, although there are exceptions for those 16 and older with parental consent. The person you wish to marry cannot be a relative. Same-sex marriage is not allowed in Illinois. A couple must be made up of opposite sexes to receive a license.
Visit one of the six locations for the Cook County Clerk. The main office is located on Washington Street in downtown Chicago. www.cookcountyclerk.com
Look for the Marriage Licensing office or desk. Ask the clerk for a marriage license application. Fill out the form completely. Sign it and have your future spouse sign it as well. Present photo identification to the clerk when asked.
Beginning in April 2009, the application fee of $40 must be paid to the clerk by cash, check or money order.
Bring both of your parents or legal guardians to the Clerk’s office if you are 16 or 17 years old. They must provide a sworn statement documenting their consent and provide photo identification. If you are under 18, you must also provide a certified copy of your birth certificate and another piece of identification–such as a driver’s license–that shows your birth date.
Bring a certified copy of your divorce papers if you have been divorced within the last 6 months. This documentation is required to receive another marriage license
Wait for the marriage license to be processed. The Cook County Clerk’s Office processes marriage licenses on the same day, so it will be available shortly after you submit your application. The license becomes valid on the following day and is good for 60 days
Have your pastor or officiate sign the bottom portion of the marriage license after the wedding ceremony. Mail it to the Clerk’s Office you visited in Step 2.
